The problem that all of these DAM’s are going to face is that they’re so late to the party People have had YEARS working in Lightroom, building their catalogs with edits, developing familiarity with the interface and muscle memory in regard to hotkeys.
When something so critical to your workflow becomes that ingrained, it becomes very difficult to migrate everything over to a new eco-system where you will probably at least in the short term take a major productivity hit due to the need to get familiar with the new software, interface, hotkeys, and workflow.
I’d personally love to try hopping over to Capture One because I’ve heard such good things and see great results coming from it, but I just can’t bring myself to sit down and learn a new software when the old one is not really doing anything really wrong.

It’s still my go-to software for all things jpg view, rename,resize , no one else comes close. I’ve been using Ultimate since a version before they switched to using the year in the name. Currently on Maybe my computer is too slow these days, but I have tried other software that seems much more prompt feeling in use jumping from one image to the next, adjusting sliders, etc.
Another thing is that and previous builds never felt great with multiprocessing. If I have a youtube video playing in my second monitor, editing a RAW at the same time can make it clip and stutter.
I’m curious to see just how much quicker is That’s why they were practically giving away the bundle, a new version coming out. One thing I’m not thrilled about, ACDSee has “taken over” the operating system’s file association function. Not cool. I tried upgrading to , but ran into issues that caused instability and I never fully diagnosed them as the upgrade wasn’t really needed. Even though my hardware met the spec, it may have been something with it.
Not sure. The reason why I gravitated to ACDSee was its compatibility with my existing photo library arrangement, that it didn’t try to force on me a new file organization, which is completely unnecessary. It seems fast and pretty efficient as a non-destructive editing suite and I like the way its import function works. I’d give it pretty poor grades as a database management system for photos. It’s a cludge in that respect and I run a separate DAM for challenging retrieval tasks.
I’ll probably upgrade to this version and,if I need to, upgrade my hardware for it. I hope it is a reliable build. Interesting, I was trying ACDsee as well and have an issue exactly with the file-management: after editing an image, the SW writes to the original folder-structure, creating folders and files and renaming stuff – I was not able to change this annoying behavior and it forced me to search further C1 under Win completely useless as full of bugs and corrupting catalogs, LR rude payware.
But the stupid file-management drives me crazy. Were you able to workaround this? Looks great, except for the part where it’s not just Windows, but explicitly tied to Microsoft Office. It’s listed as required software to run this app. Too bad. Heck, there doesn’t even seem to be a Mac version-which surprises me more than there not being a Linux port. Might just have to try the trial version. As a general usage matter, that Office requirement is not really believable.
Probably Maybe there’s some function that you can use if you want that uses Office. I would hope so. I mean why would you need Office to edit your photos? But they were quite specific in the software section of the requirements page. That would make sense to me. I used ACDsee at the time of Windows I had also a cracked version of Adobe CS4. Last year a bought the dutch version of ACDsee Version 8 and i love it. The new ACDsee looks promissing to invest again. I still use V3.
I use a newer version for editing, what little I do. It probably does. I had this issue with a Sony A Turns out the Sony raw files have their read only ticked in properties. This doesn’t effect them being processed in lightroom or some other softwares, but I need to untick to process Sony raw file in ACDsee.
Update I will try, if it works I will inform the ACDsee team because they did not know how to give me the solution, thank you. The “read-only” attribute was not selected, so unfortunately there is no solution to the problem. Been using ACDsee for few years now. Still have adobe subscription. I dislike it’s noise reduction and though it claims speedy, everytime you edit a raw file and switch mode or photo it needs to update the file. Not quite as good as lightroom for highlights and shadow recovery, but great if you haven’t been applied by other software.
Yes, even the JPG editor is lossless. Have they fixed the bug that fails to refresh the directory tree when you make a change to folders? It’s annoying having to reboot the program. Do the experts know if there’s a way to overcome this? I can race through PP with this program, including heavy metadata, so I don’t mean to complain It’s a good program if you need to crank out a lot of product quickly.
I import all my photos with ACDSee. If you’re used to programs like Adobe bridge, it’s in many ways similar. The UI looks a bit “dated”, but that’s the only negative I can say about it. Fairly easy to use for beginners and more advanced users should have no problem at all. It was very fast to view images which were all in GIF format at the time. I do not purchase every new version, usually every other one.
I’ve used their Ultimate for several years dropping everything Adobe. So much easier and faster to get the top results, especially light controls. When I switch over to a R5 I’ll probably get this version assuming they will update it for the Canon.

Why the need to “refine edge” since you would want to do it with “smart fill” anyway? Why not just make “smart” fill I bought a subscription plan a few years back so I always get the latest released update each year. Some performance improvements, bug fixes and new features added each time.

The edit mode has layers capability. The database features are extensive. In the user forums problems are discussed and solutions usually found. Some feature suggestions from users, including myself, have been implemented by ACDSee. Once you get the hang of it, there is very little out there that improves on it.

I ought to caveat this review by saying that as with any photo-editing software, they take a lot of time and effort to master, and so, the nuances and deepest reaches of functionality of ACDSee may go untapped. With no further ado, let’s begin unpacking. The first is manage mode, which is your image library, where you can index with ratings, categories, color coding, and so on. The organization functions once photos have been categorized is strong, with the user being able to find images by date, ratings, and the other user assigned tags, but also filter by aspects of the metadata.

However, it is significantly easier, more intuitive, and quicker to use, allowing you to alter colors and areas of your image. The interface of any software in this area has a lot to do. There are enormous quantities of information and organization going on, and so, keeping the program clean and intuitive is no small task.
ACDSee does it well by keeping it as simple and as clinical as it can be. In fact, if I were to be pushed for a criticism of it, that would be it: it looks a touch dated. However, what it might lack in shine, it more than makes up for in customizability. Anything that speeds up a photographer’s workflow is going to be valuable. I have always considered Lightroom to be sluggish even on my PC, which is above and beyond what is needed.
One side note on performance — and I must stress this is a layman’s observation for the most part — is the resources ACDSee draws upon compared to Lightroom. Now, I always have Chrome tabs open, as well as a plethora of other programs running and I noticed no slow-down or stress, but for older and lower-end machines, this shift in resource requirements could potentially pose an issue.
However, in the same light, it could be the genius behind the smoother and quicker workflow with significantly less memory required to run. So, what was my experience of the performance? Really good. The speed at which everything works, from preview generation through to batch processing, is quicker than I’m used to. The importing felt the same sort of speed as Lightroom, perhaps marginally quicker, but I think that’s gated by a number of factors outside of software like card reader, card, USB, and so on.
This is arguably the most fundamental and important difference between Lightroom and ACDSee Ultimate : you don’t have to import files. That is, ACDSee accesses your drives directly and bypasses importing the files into a catalog.
ACDSee still has an import function, but that is merely copying your files from your card reader over to your local hard drive, and not storing duplicates of the files in its own database. This is such a tiny feature, but its quality-of-life impact has been sizable for me. It’s not technically in the ACDSee client but an added functionality outside of it. All it does is add an extra section to the dropdown menu of your operating system’s right click, which shows a small but high-quality preview of the file and the EXIF data.
The EXIF data is always useful, but you could argue the preview is superfluous unless you have your files listed in folders without preview icons generated. This technology is becoming more and more prominent in not only software but cameras too. It has a wealth of applications and can drastically smooth and speed up your workflow.
It can be used for weddings to ensure you categorize and track images of guests or the couple themselves or even make images of a model you’ve used more than once searchable by name. It’s a very powerful way of indexing images. This is an important topic with most artists not having huge disposable budgets to dish out for software. Pricing is also an area to discuss that’s becoming more and more frustrating, particularly with Adobe. I pay for an Adobe CC subscription, which covers lots of software.
Some people prefer to buy the software outright, which isn’t an option for Lightroom CC, and so like many others, I was forced to pay monthly. It’s thoroughly infuriating. Fortunately, with all of ACDSee’s products, the pricing is easier, and cheaper. It’s not a few filters a presets, it’s four other pieces of software and cloud storage. Also, their business plans don’t go up in price tenfold like their competitors, but only a couple of dollars per month, per user.
The file management and presentation of those files, coupled with the impressive speed at which the software works are a huge draw to it. This can be an important difference when you’re working with large batches of images or many batch of images. If the price of the software was around the same as Lightroom CC, I’d focus on this as almost its USP over the all-in-one image processing, but it’s great value means it has appeal to a wide range of photographers.
Change is uncomfortable, particularly when you’re so used to a certain way of doing things, but time saved is money saved, and money saved is ACDSee have been flying a little under the radar, but it’s time we started paying attention to the little blips they are making, because they’re getting bigger and for good reason.

Not cool dude. The problem that all of these DAM’s are going to face is that they’re so late to the party People have had YEARS working in Lightroom, building their catalogs with edits, developing familiarity with the interface and muscle memory in regard to hotkeys. When something so critical to your workflow becomes that ingrained, it becomes very difficult to migrate everything over to a new eco-system where you will probably at least in the short term take a major productivity hit due to the need to get familiar with the new software, interface, hotkeys, and workflow.
I’d personally love to try hopping over to Capture One because I’ve heard such good things and see great results coming from it, but I just can’t bring myself to sit down and learn a new software when the old one is not really doing anything really wrong. Every time I start an edit, I just end up switching back to Lightroom because I can just do what I need faster there purely due to familiarity and I can move onto other things.
It’s not any flaw with Capture One, but familiarity is a real difficult obstacle to overcome. I switched just over a year ago and it was the best decision Ive made. I switched back to LR. CO has good image quality but the workflow is a mass.

It is good to have one more alternative. One program which you omitted in your compare of prices is Corel’s AfterShot, what is a former Bibble. PaintShop Pro is rather a replacement for Photoshop, not for Lightroom. I think one feature which might encourage the transition would be an import of lrcat Lightroom files.
